Projects: Ufuoma Essi

MoMA, Floor 1

Artist Ufuoma Essi, based in southeast London, explores how “We carry history in body,” and challenges how official archives often marginalize Black experiences. Through film, she reclaims these narratives using personal memory, found footage, and influences from Black feminist writers and performers.

This presentation features two of her Super 8mm works: Half Memory (2024), inspired by Toni Morrison’s notion of “rememory,” and Bodies In Dissent (2021). Essi’s camera traces how histories of performance hold traces of lived history across time and generations.
