The History Knott’s Soak City

Knott’s Berry Farm was America’s first theme park and it started out as a humble, roadside farm and market. It grew so much over the years that it later added the famous waterpark.

The Knott family would move to Buena Park, California in the 1920s and with the help of a cousin who was an experienced berry farmer, the Knott Family would lease land and begin to farm berries.

By 1923, the Knott Family had a large enough crop to begin selling their berries from a roadside stand on a nearby avenue. At the stand, they would sell berries as well as jams and pies made from their home-grown berries. As business and their crops grew – so did the stand. By 1927 the Knott Family purchased the land, built a house, and made a permanent shop to replace their roadside stand. Their new shop was named Knott’s Berry Place.

Even as the Great Depression began to take hold of America, the Knott Family continued to grow their farm and business. After expanding their land and business the Knott Family decided to investigate claims of a newly created berry which was a fusion between raspberries, loganberries, and blackberries made by a local berry farmer named Rudolph Boysen. Mr. Boysen had abandoned the idea but allowed the Knott family to continue the experiment.

A year later and the Knott family had grown massive berries which they dubbed Boysenberries after the original creator. After this successful experiment, they created products using the Boysenberries which became a smash hit, further propelling the family into the public eye.

Cordelia Knott’s, Walter’s wife, made a deliciously famous fried chicken dinner which became the center of a public frenzy and ended up opening a restaurant, their daughter Virginia later added a small trinket shop and suddenly, the Knott Family Farm became a franchise.

By 1940, Knott’s Berry Farm grew even more popular with the addition of attractions as well as the main street, styled after the Old West where patrons waiting to eat Cordelia’s food could relax and shop around. Walter’s Ghost Town was a hit and quickly became a hotspot for locals and tourists alike.

Slowly but surely, the Knott Family incorporated rides, shows, and attractions into their farm. That is how Knott’s Berry Farm theme park was born.

Many of the first rides were themed after the Wild West, from a wooden rollercoaster to a Calico train ride and a Calico Mine ride. However, as the park grew, Knott’s Berry Farm ventured from the Old West and started incorporating different themes as well.

This is where the idea for Knott’s Soak City began to form. The waterpark itself was built years before it would be acquired by Knott's Berry Farm but once owned, they would expand 4 extra acres of slides to the park grounds.

After planning and development, Knott’s Soak City waterpark opened its doors on June 17, 2000.

There are a lot of areas that can be unsafe for small children to be near unattended, including the lazy river, wave pool, and slide structures. Appropriate Attire

You must bring your swimsuit to enjoy the water rides at the park. To make the most of your trip, consider the following suggestions:

  • You must wear suitable swimwear. A one- or two-piece swimsuit is the standard definition of swimwear. Please do not wear pants, denim, thongs, or see-through clothing—no metal jewelry or buttons are allowed.
  • Old Man Falls, the Laguna Stormwatch Tower, Malibu Run, the Shore Break Tower, The Wedge, Banzai Falls, Beach House Slides, and the Gremmie Lagoon Slides are off-limits to guests wearing any metal on their bathing equipment, including buttons, rivets, zippers, or snaps.
  • Soak City's rides and games are shoe-free zones: Banzai Falls and the Wedge welcome water shoes, such as aqua socks.
  • Contact an Aquatics manager if you or your party need assistance during your stay. Some riding limits may be in place to meet the needs of the attraction's manufacturer.
  • Children who are still in diapers but old enough to enjoy water parks must wear brightly colored swim diapers. Don’t worry! The WipeOut Surf Shop sells swim diapers for your little ones.

Life Jacket

Across Soak City, life jackets are accessible for use. All guests who prefer to utilize a life jacket are welcome to do so at no additional cost. Wearing a life jacket is strongly recommended for children, non-swimmers, and weak swimmers. All guests who require special assistance have access to life jackets.

Children under a specific height restriction may not enter certain attractions without wearing a life jacket. Lifeguards and other aquatics staff have the authority to require wearing life vests at any time. Guests are welcome to bring their life vests, but the Coast Guard must approve them.

First Aid

There is a first aid station close to the Davy Jones Lockers. Please see the First Aid attendant or a nearby lifeguard if you have any emergencies at the park. They will be happy to lend a hand if you need it.

Park's Accessibility

To accommodate guests with special needs, a water wheelchair is offered at the water areas of Tidal Wave Bay and Gremmie Lagoon on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests can take turns using the water wheelchair throughout the day. At the pool's outside entrance, near Sunset River you can find a pool lift for your convenience.

If you need to use the water wheelchair or the pool lift during your stay, or if you have any other questions about the accessibility of our facilities, please don't hesitate to ask a member of our Aquatics management team.

Lockers

You'll find the lockers inside the main entrance to Soak City. There are lockers of many different sizes available for your convenience. Rental of lockers is fully automated and can be paid for with a credit card.

Electronic PINs provide users with continuous, 24-hour access to their lockers. You can use the lockers until Soak City closes for the day. Lost or stolen items are not the responsibility of Soak City.

Payment Method

Credit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, and most debit cards, can be used to make purchases. They also accept Google Pay and Apple Pay. Many Cash-to-Card kiosks are spread out over the park, where you may exchange cash for a prepaid card at no charge.

The unused balance can be utilized at any store that accepts VISA.

Cedar Fair Parks’ Chaperone Policy

The safety of our guests and associates has always been our top priority at Knott's Soak City. Over the past two years, there have been increasing incidents of unruly and inappropriate behavior across our industry and at other major entertainment venues. We are committed to keeping Knott's Soak City a place where families and friends come together to enjoy a one-of-a-kind park full of fun experiences and immersive entertainment.

As part of that commitment, we are implementing a chaperone policy beginning Saturday, April 22, 2023.

Under this policy, all guests ages 15 years old or younger must be accompanied by a chaperone who is at least 21 years old in order to be admitted to, or remain in, the park after 4:00 p.m. local time to close. The chaperone must present a valid government-issued photo identification with date of birth at ticket entry. One (1) chaperone may accompany no more than ten (10) guests ages 15 or younger per day. In addition, the chaperone must accompany their party during entry, remain inside the park during their visit, and be available by phone throughout their stay. Guests ages 15 years old or younger who are found inside the park unaccompanied by a chaperone will be subject to ejection. This chaperone requirement applies to all Knott's Soak City ticket and season passholders.
